Yesterday was mostly cloudy with some showers falling all morning into the afternoon. We had .32 of an inch of rain, bringing us to .56 for the month. We spent most of the day in the mid-60s.
Drier air will move into the region today with highs in the lower to mid-70s. We’ll have another chance for showers and storms on Tuesday, but dry conditions return on Wednesday. Overnight lows are expected to be in the 40s and 50s with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s through midweek.
Weather History
2006: Small tornadoes hit Caledonia in Kent County and Muir in Montcalm County. The Caledonia tornado did some roof damage to a storage facility and a barn. The Muir tornado caused no structural damage but took down some tree limbs.
On September 23, 2021, several days of rain ended after a series of low-pressure systems tracked through the region. Rainfall totals from September 21 to 23 ranged from 2 to 5 inches, which led to minor to moderate flooding. Gusty winds also accompanied the stronger low pressure on the 22nd to 23rd, with numerous wind gusts over 45 mph and scattered power outages reported.
On September 23, 1974, record lows on the 22nd and 23rd of 30 degrees and 29 degrees, respectively, brought the earliest freeze on record to Detroit.
NWS Forecast
Forecast Discussion
- Dry Today High pressure fills in on the backside of the system low that brought much needed rainfall yesterday. Expect dry conditons today with temperatures in the 70s. Another round of showers looks likely Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning as a surface low associated with an upper shortwave tracks through Lower Michigan. - Showers ending Tuesday night, then dry through Friday The high amplitude upper trough and associated surface low will be moving northeast across the cwa Tuesday night. We`ll see highest PoPs Tuesday evening as the low moves across the cwa. However, once the low moves into northern Lower, the precipitation will end quickly. The upper trough is progd to be sheared off Wednesday with a cutoff low meandering over the ArkLaTex area and a ridge building into the Great Lakes from the west. That will produce dry and sunny conditions Wednesday through Friday. Above normal temperatures in the mid to upper 70s are anticipated; dewpoints in the 50s will make for comfortable conditions. - Low chance of rain during the weekend An interesting setup is developing for the weekend. Models are showing a sizable hurricane in the Gulf moving north toward the FL panhandle and getting caught up in the upper level circulation of the meandering ArkLaTex upper low. That essentially pushes what`s left of the tropical system north through the TN and OH Valleys. There`s still a lot of uncertainty to this situation and although the models show much of the precipitation falling well south of Michigan, some may sneak north into the southern cwa.
Clearly a rain event for the Lakeshore exclusively 🙁

We took a road trip to Bay City over the weekend and while there is not a lot of color (it is just September) there was none the less some color and a lot of faded leaf stress due to the dryness so far this month. Also, a lot of leaves have fallen due to the stress. Here in MBY I recorded 0.47” of rain yesterday. The overnight low and current temperature is 53 with clear skies.
