I will be out of town tomorrow, so Slim will take over for the day with a post. You should also check out his daily Substack posts (the link is in the right sidebar).
We have a light cover of snow on the ground this morning and a temperature of 28°. The winds will die down today and the sun will gradually make a welcome appearance and temperatures will only be in the mid-30s. Our temperatures will recover into the mid 50s to near 60 next week.
Weather History
1956: Severe thunderstorms moved across Lower Michigan ahead of a strong cold front. A tornado destroyed five barns and unroofed homes in North Blendon and Bauer in Ottawa County.
On March 6, 1960, the overnight temperature dropped to -6 degrees in Flint, which is the record low temperature for the day. Curiously enough, the very next year, in 1961, the daytime temperature rose to 64 degrees, setting the record high temperature for the day!
Forecast Discussion
- Windy And Diminishing Snow Today No changes to the ongoing Wind Advisory. While winds have generally been around 40 mph across inland areas tonight, BUFKIT overviews show that we mix to around 40 knots for the next several hours keeping the potential for advisory level winds. Winds have been a bit better in the 45-55 mph range along the lakeshore. Thus keeping the current course is warranted. Will re-evaluate near daybreak to see if the advisory for inland counties can be ended a bit early. Lake effect snow showers will also diminish this morning as the departure of the driving shortwave and low-level moisture continues. Cannot rule out a few slick spots this morning from light overnight accumulations as road temps have fallen into the upper 20s. A low chance of light snow showers then returns north of I96 this evening as the result of a mass response from a developing mid-level jet to our east. If any accumulations do occur they will be minimal. - Generally Dry and Seasonable Friday-Sunday There is a low (about 30 percent) chance of light rain or snow showers near I94 Friday thanks to a mid-level wave shearing out across the Ohio Valley as it merges with the mean flow. The main limiting factor will be the best moisture remaining south of the region. Little QPF with this means at most a light dusting of snow is possible near I94. Looking into the rest of the weekend, while a few mid-level shortwaves will swing through the region, again poor moisture quality (and 850mb temps just a tad warm for moisture flux off of the lake) means that we won`t see any precipitation. Highs will be near 40 Friday and Saturday and cling into the 40s Sunday as our pattern change begins. - Notable Warmup and Dry Early Next Week The overall pattern changes early next week as a broad mid-level ridge and associated surface high move into the region. Subsidence from this wave, little in the way of moisture, and 850mb temps climbing to near 10C will bring plenty of sunshine and highs likely reaching the 60s for at least some of the area Monday/Tuesday. A dry cold front looks to lower temps slightly (highs in the 50s) for Wednesday bit the lack of a substantial mid-level wave until Thursday keeps temps moderated and conditions dry.
It sure was a cold winter and we will be seeing more accumulating snow this season! Don’t be surprised and get ready! Fantastic! Nothing better than snow in March!
Bring it on! Snow, snow, snow!

What is that like 5 inches of snow for us over the next 16 days??? LOL!!! BIG WHOOP!
Forget golf! How about snowmobiling or skiing up North! You wouldn’t catch me golfing in mid March – the courses are in horrendous shape – in the shade the ground is still partially frozen, grass is not growing, mushy, wet, etc! Horrible conditions!
Why drive 10 hours round trip to ski, when I can golf on pristine courses 10 minutes away??
I love early springs!

Always wrong I’m afraid. He also promised a foot of snow the past 2 weeks and then tries to get excited about a day with no snow under 35 degrees.
Ehhh…this blog has mostly become a cold troll blog anyway full of cold Fantasies and Mistruths. I typically laugh at the outrageousness and wishcasting!
The info from Slim & Michael is still spot on though! That’s why I visit everyday!
All this winter hype and no snow on the ground as usual!!

Rock on Indy and keep the winter facts rolling!
Impressive snows in the UP yesterday! Incredible! From NWS Marquette FB page:
With a calendar day total of 20.8″ on March 5th, this is now tied for the 9th snowiest calendar day on record at NWS Marquette, and the 3rd snowiest March day.
The 2.55″ of liquid equivalent precipitation also makes this the wettest March day on record! The previous record was 2.42″ in 2006. Records date to 1959. #906wx

West Michigan had 77 days of a inch or more of snow on the ground in a roll this Wimter season it’s been a awesome Winter reminds me of the 70’s … INDY
According to the NWS Grand Rapids has had 61 days this winter season so far. The winter of 2021/22 had 72 days.
Slim
That sounds far more accurate than 77 days in a row. I’m guessing that 61 was also not consecutive, especially since we just had a green Christmas and new years which was less than 77 days ago.
This is also not true
What happened to the 60’s next week 😆..INDY
WOOD currently has 58 degrees and 60 degrees Tues and Wed. Blowtorch!
did you read the start of the post?
Pure hype as usual!
GR is now -8.3″ below average snowfall for the season and growing.
GR is also now above average temps for March.
Marquette had 20” of snow yesterday, pretty incredible for March. Most spots in the swath of snow saw a foot or less… I’d have to imagine there was lake enhancement there
Our son is going to Michigan Tech in the fall. His vehicle is 4WD and he loves winter. My wife didn’t realize that we’re closer to Nashville than MTU. It’s a good 8.5 hour drive, so I don’t know how often we will get up to visit him.
Daily Almanac the Official H/L yesterday at GRR was 53/27 there was 0.52” of rainfall and a trace of snowfall. The highest wind gust was 44MPH out of the W. There was 5% of possible sunshine. For today the average H/L is 40/24 the record high of 68 was in 1973, 1983 the coldest high of 16 was in 1920 the record low of 0 was in 1920 the warmest low of 50 was in 1894. The most rainfall of 0.68” was in 1894 the most snowfall of 5.6” was in 1971 the most snow on the ground was 19” in 2014.
The overnight low here in MBY was 26 I recorded 0.44” of rainfall yesterday and overnight. There is a snow cover of 0.4” on the ground here making the ground white for a while. My old cat is not feeling well and I will be taking her to the vet when they open up this morning.
Slim
Hope your cat is ok slim!!
