Cold & Blustery

We have a frigid and windy morning. The temperature is 11° at 7 a.m. With the wind blowing, it is hard to say how much snow has fallen. I will get an “official” measurement later this morning.

Yesterday we had a high of 33° and a low of 18°.

Gusty west winds and temperatures in the teens will create sub-zero wind chills today. Poor travel conditions will persist as the lake effect snow and blowing snow continues. Weather conditions improve for tonight into Friday then rain moves in over the weekend as temperatures warm to near 40.

Weather History

1949: Balmy weather continues. For the second day in a row, temperatures set record highs at Grand Rapids and Lansing.

1958: Arctic air continues across Lower Michigan. Record cold temperatures include 5 below zero at both Grand Rapids and Muskegon.

On December 12, 2016, a snow storm wrapped up in the early morning hours after snowing for much of the previous day. Snow measurements across Southeast Michigan generally ranged from 8 to 11 inches. NWS White Lake measured 11.3 inches and Flint 10.4 making it their 9th and 15th largest single-event snow accumulations on record respectively.

Also on December 12, 2010, low pressure tracked near the Michigan/Ohio border and then northeast into Ontario. Precipitation started as rain before changing to snow. Snowfall accumulations across southeast Michigan were generally in the 3 to 7 inch range before Arctic air rushed into the region. The quick freeze created a thick accumulation of ice on many of the area roads. In addition, gusty winds of 25 to 40 mph occurred during Sunday afternoon leading to scattered power outages. Some of the higher snowfall reports included Bad Axe with 15 inches, Yale with 9 inches, White Lake with 7.7 inches, Clifford with 7 inches, Midland with 7 inches, Riverview with 6.4 inches, and Howell with 6.3 inches.

Also on December 12, 1949, the record high temperature for the day was set at 61 degrees in Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw simultaneously! This is 27 degrees above average.

Forecast Discussion

- Cold, Snowy Today

Radar shows snow bands continuing to move southeast across the
cwa. Visibilities within the snow bands have been dipping to a
quarter mile at times. The arctic front moved through earlier in
the evening and surface temperatures are in the teens; we`ll see
little movement in temperature today. H8 temps will continue to
fall to around -21c today. Boundary layer temperatures and wind
won`t change much today from what they are currently. Boundary
layer moisture will decrease a bit as the day progresses.

Bufkit profiles show that lift within the DGZ decreases after 12z
but doesn`t totally abate. Given the conditions conducive to lake
effect snow production, we extended the Winter Weather Advisory
for the southeast six counties until 15z. No other changes were
made to the headlines.

- Warming Trend begins over the Weekend

The deep upper trough will begin to move out of the western Great
Lakes Friday and take the core of colder air with it. As ridging
moves in Friday, temperatures will begin to warm. Friday will be a
dry day. The warmer air will continue to flow into the region over
the weekend and into next week as a short wave ridge moves
overhead. Surface temperatures will warm into the mid 30s Saturday
and mid 40s Sunday.

A southern stream short wave will take aim on the Great Lakes
Saturday and spread rain through the cwa Saturday night and
Sunday. Given the warmer air through the profile, the
precipitation should be rain.

I see some “cold weather advisories” to our west. I believe those are a replacement for wind chill advisories this year

We have about 5.5 inches on our south deck (this is where I take all my measurements).

We rec’d probably 2″ at most. Good snowfall forecast for this area by the pros. Roads are icy this morning. Just the rural school districts are closed. Beware, it is dangerously cold outside.

Have a great day, friends, and STAY WARM.
