Christmas Vacation – Snow Outlook

I start my long vacation from my real job today with our first Christmas celebration later this afternoon, my wife’s birthday is tomorrow then it off to see my mother (she is 81).  We have our big Christmas party on Monday with a house full of family with lots of grand-kids running around (I have 10 grand-kids).  You can imagine my five kids and their spouses and all the grand-kids making noise and having a good time (thank God I have hearing aids so I can regulate the noise levels).  I am blessed to have such a large and healthy family.

This is not only a time of gift giving and celebration it is also a time of reflection of how blessed we are to have family each with their own hopes and dreams of a bright future.  It is time to break out of our bubble of self reflection and look around to beyond ourselves to those who need our help and prayers who hope our generosity goes beyond the Christmas holiday.

I can guarantee I will have a mini sermon for you on Christmas Eve as this is the season of remembrance and celebration of the birth of Christ.  I would be remiss if I didn’t because of my background of being active in the church for so may years.  I know many pastors from the area churches, my favorite discussion with one of them was about how we as Christians are looked as being crazy, especially in this day and age.  We believe in something we can not physically see or touch – we go by feeling and faith.  We can not see the air we breath, we feel it in our lungs and it keeps us alive, we have faith that the air will be there for us to breath.

Low pressure passing south of Michigan will produce areas of light snow and freezing drizzle this morning. Some roads may be slick with black ice during the morning commute. Progressively colder air will gradually filter into the region over the weekend, and highs much of next week will only be in the teens. The colder air will result in occasional lake effect snow showers with some light accumulations likely.

Our best chance of snow comes on Sunday with the possibility of 1 or 2 inches to give us a white Christmas over much of the area.  We should keep the lake effect going next week but the air will be fairly dry so I am not expecting any big snow dumps.

Today: A slight chance of freezing drizzle before 11am, then a slight chance of drizzle between 11am and 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight: Cloudy, with a low around 29. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph after midnight.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. North northwest wind 6 to 10 mph.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Sunday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 26. West wind 5 to 9 mph.

Sunday Night: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 17. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Christmas Day: Snow showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11.

Tuesday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16.

Tuesday Night: A chance of snow showers, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 10.

Wednesday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 19.

Wednesday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 11.

I’m Spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this Year I see the countless Christmas trees, Around the world below. With tiny lights, like heaven’s stars, Reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, Please wipe away that tear. For I’m spending Christmas, With Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs, That people hold so dear. But the sounds of music can’t compare, With the Christmas choir up here. For I have no words to tell you, The joy their voices bring. For it is beyond description, To hear the angels sing. I can’t tell you of the… Read more »

87 Days….Till SPRING…..

Slim

There are hints (good hints) that starting in the 2nd week of January a warmer pattern could be setting up shop. While it could still snow in a mild mid winter pattern it also could be mild enough for it to be just rain.

The forecast for next week has really backed off on the cold. Fine with me. I don’t mind snow, but I cannot take zero or subzero temps.

If the updated 5-day precipitation forecast comes true, many in Southern Lower Michigan will not be seeing a white Christmas this year. Dry.

Well, we keep hearing you say that, but with one third of the Winter months almost gone we are at a snow deficit of 4 or 5 inches with not much coming on the horizon. It is strange we have not had a major storm or blizzard in 7 or 8 years now. I suppose we are due one of these years.

Steve in Portage

Here in Poratge we just have snow piles. The official Kalamazoo snowfall is recorded at Western Michigan University and the most in Kalamazoo was 3.4 on the 7th and 3.3 six days later and 2 other days with over 2 inches. All in all kind of quiet here so far.

Winter Weather Advisory dropped for most of the area as precipitation ends and temps warm above freezing. That sure was a pointless advisory!

The snow drought continues…

NWS GR long term forecast for next week: “it does not look like we will see significant accumulations due to multiple reasons.”

Slim

So far this winter season Grand Rapids is at 18.8″ of snow fall(not including todays) . The average at this date is 23.1″ (that is the average as of this date not the end of the month) so GR is now about -4.3″ for the year. Grand Rapids is still on tract for the 3 year in a row of below average snow fall.
