Santa Tracker
NORAD has been tracking Santa for over 60 years, starting accidentally in 1955. That year, a young girl called the Continental Air Defense Command Operations Center in Colorado Springs, thinking she would speak to Santa after seeing an ad in her local newspaper.
The commander on the other end of the phone, Air Force Colonel Harry Shoup, realized the mistake and assured the girl Santa would arrive safely on Christmas. She wasn’t the last child to call the unlisted phone number that night. Ultimately, the tradition was born and continued with NORAD after its creation in 1958. Here you can find the Santa Tracker.
Weather History
1993: A Christmas Eve snowstorm drops from 3 to 8 inches of snow across Lower Michigan and ushers in several weeks of severe winter weather
On December 24, 2017, a storm strengthened and pulled in cold air as it moved from west to east across the area. Snow totals ranged from 2-4″ west of US-23 to 4-7″ to the east. Peak measurements of 6.1″ and 6.8″ were made in Macomb County.
Also, December 24, 1983, was a very cold day across Southeast Michigan. Detroit only had a high temperature of 3 degrees above zero, and the low was 9 degrees below zero. Flint and Saginaw were not much warmer with respective highs of 6 and 7 degrees, and lows of 5 below and 3 below zero. December 1983 was the 5th coldest December for Detroit and Flint, and it was the 3rd coldest December for Saginaw.
Forecast Discussion
- Tranquil weather with moderating temperatures this week A sfc high pressure ridge centered over MN early this morning will continue to build eastward and bring tranquil wx to our area through midweek. High temps will reach the low to mid 30s today and mid 30s for Christmas Day. Some patchy fog may develop at times with light sfc winds through midweek. Patchy fog potential is boosted by lingering low level moisture and additional boundary layer moisture from some melting snow this afternoon and again Wednesday afternoon. High temps by Thursday will reach the upper 30s to lower 40s and then well into the 40s by Friday. A few light warm air advection rain showers or sprinkles are possible both days. - Mild and wet weekend A better chance for rain showers will come this weekend with deep moisture in place by then and as several shortwaves move ne across our area out ahead of the upper trof to our west. In addition there is potential for a low pressure system to move ne from the Arklatex region to potentially bring steadier rain Saturday night into Sunday. High temps this weekend will reach well into the 40s in a strong waa pattern and in spite of the showers.
A day late (been crazy busy with the restaurant), but why on earth was there an advisory yesterday?? The first half of the day was dry, later in the afternoon we had some mist/drizzle and 35 degrees. We now get advisories for drizzle? Should be an advisory today for the blinding sunshine. The little snow we had on the ground is gone, nice green Christmas on tap!
Yea definitely did not need an advisory. I think with the slight ice potential and holiday travel they wanted to play it safe… clearly didn’t pan out though
The roads were slick here late afternoon but not for very long. The WWA here was in effect all day, but really wasn’t necessary. Probably best to err on the side of caution, though – especially with so many people on the roads for the holidays.
It could be said that so far this winter season the advisory’s watches and warnings have not really been needed. Here in my area most of the snow in now gone with a lot of bare spots. It will called a trace at best so no official white Christmas this year.

Still 2 inches of SNOWon the ground! white Christmas baby! Who would have thought?
Merry Christmas, my friends. I hope everyone has a blessed, enjoyable holiday.
A green Christmas and 50’s upcoming!
Appropriately, it’s a Green & White Christmas here. 😁
With temperatures staying at 33 all night the snow on the ground here is now showing a lot of bare spots. So will have to wait and see how much snow is left tomorrow morning. While there should be some snow on the ground there will be a lot of bare spots and will have to see how GRR responds yesterday the official snow depth was just 1″
