We have another exciting week weather-wise that is if you find snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain exciting. I am beginning to look at it more as a nuisance than inviting. My newest cat, Monster has been becoming adept at sneaking out with the dogs, sometimes he hides underneath them when they line up at the door. This being his first winter he has become confused at the white stuff on the ground and having to porpoise through it to get around. He is supposed to be an indoor cat, however it is a great big world out there which in his mind needs to be explored which of course is the way of cats. He is very quick so he has had the opportunity to experience all the types and styles of weather Michigan has to offer this winter – to him it is exciting until he becomes soaked by the rain or has to hop about like a rabbit in the deep snow. I think the main issue here is that he watches the birds and squirrels at the feeders from the kitchen windows and wants to get out there to see what all the excitement is about. There are times we have six squirrels and countless birds at the feeders and I think it drives him crazy not being able to get at them. There are some days I think we have every bird in Otsego at our feeders. Our other cats take a look outside then decide to stay in where it is warm and dry which may be setting an example for us humans as our weather this week won’t be fit for man nor beast.
Looking at Consumers power outage map most of the area affected by last weeks ice has the power back on with the exception of around 1400 homes east of Grand Rapids in the rural communities. We now have another system moving in for tonight which may move the line of freezing rain further south of I96 where Allegan, Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties and eastward could a quarter to a third of and inch of ice along with a mix of wet snow and sleet. On the back side of the system the winds will pick up gusting to 40 mph and snow totals of 1 to 4 inches. North of the I96 corridor should see all snow of the heavy wet variety from this system with up to 6 or more inches.
We have a winter weather advisory for the west side of the lower peninsula and a winter storm watch for the east side. Both begin at midnight tonight – the advisory lasts through 1pm Wednesday, the watch ends at 7am Wednesday. Travel will once again be hazardous so take care…
Is it winter yet? Not bad for an El Niño winter! Could it be that all the experts were wrong predicting below normal seasonal snowfall?

Breaking weather news>>>>>>the 18z RDB model gives GR 5 to 8inches of snow by Wednesdayafternoo. And then more snow on Thursday night and Friday! Is winter here yet?
Let me describe the snow and ski conditions up in snow country. Absolutely perfect and Heaven on Earth! Currently In a wsw for up to 11inches of snow! I love it!
Im thinking this storm is getting stronger and Grand Rapids can easily see 12+ inches of snow by Wednesday afternoon now would not surprise me if NWS gives Kent county a winter storm warning next update no dought we should already be in there. Can’t forget the wind lots blowing snow will white out conditions ..stay tuned INDY..
Bring it!
Been snowing real fine here for the last couple hrs .. Not really accumulating much.. Just enough to grease the roads up.. Thought this wasnt suppose to start till after midnight ..
The Tigers open spring training tomorrow when the pitchers and catchers report. A sure sign of spring!
Great info here, thanks for all the input, I’m not good in the weather department, but I depend on it for my business, so it’s nice to have another tool in my pocket to use, thanks to slim and mv u guys always have great info…
Not a surpise I suppose…Steffen/Ch8 stating that all areas will exceed avg snowfall by end of the week. Cold now, with nothing but cold on the way. Too “scary” to forecast a March colder than February?…No worries, we’ll get through it, by ignoring it.
Who knew? Incredible!
MV – congrats on surpassing 20,000 views!
Yes congrats I wish more would post on here great place to talk weather …INDY…
Most come here to check out the weather – It would be nice to have some more ‘voices’ here…
This is the reading from the new counter I started this year – these are a visit from individual IP addresses.
Congrats MV!! This is the best place to check out the weather.
Good morning MV’S best storm track looking good GR north snow 5-8 inches of snow and blowing snow especially tomorrow afternoon with some ice im thinking that being said the 2pm NWS update will change our winter weather advisory to a winter storm warning time wiil tell, currently seeing some sunshine out at thee YARDofBRICKS GR NE we can call this the calm before the storm..stay tuned to further updates ..INDY.
With February being a short month, we are now 1/3 thru the month and here is were we stand so far. At Grand Rapids the mean for February is now at 26.9° (+1.8°) snow fall for the month is at 4.5” (-1.3”) so far the snow fall at Grand Rapids is since December 1st 38.4” and for the season Grand Rapids is at 52.6” last year by this date Grand Rapids had 62.9” At Muskegon the mean temperature for February at this time is 27.3° (+1.6) February snow fall there has only been 1.2” (-6.6”) since December 1st Muskegon’s snow fall is at 37.3” and for the season it is at 49.8” last year at this time they had 86.8” Off to the east at Lansing for February the mean temp is 27.6 (+3.4) there has been a reported 3.3” of snow fall (-1.0”) Lansing January snow fall total is not right but going by what is officially reported Since December 1st 8.9” and for the season 20.8” Last year as of this date 41.8” but as I said January snow fall is not right there.
Slim
Why do you believe Lansing’s snow fall is incorrect? I’m not disputing it either way, I’m just curious.
At Lansing they reported only 4.3″ of snow fall for January 2019 but between the 22nd and 31 every day snow fall was missing they did report 1.13″ of precipitation during that time. At Grand Rapids with 1.6″ of precipitation the snow fall was 20.7″ and at Flint during that time the snow fall was 12.1″ with 0.86″ of precipitation. so Lansing snow fall for that time (Jan 22 to 29) was less then 20.7″ but more then 12.1″
Slim
Thanks Slim.
Later people, I am off to slopes! I am sure some of the warm weather fanatics will try and tell me the ski conditions up north are not that good. Funny thing is they try and tell me what the ski and snow conditions are even when none of them have actually been up here in person! I have been up here multiple times and share eye witness facts! Incredible!
The cpc clearly shows near to below normal temps through at least the first week of March with plenty of snow! Just the facts!
In looking at just the CPC one would think that, But in looking at the GFS much of the storms would track too far west and we would get more rain then snow
Slim
The cpc is more accurate than the gfs!
The latest snow map still looks great! Keep in mind this storm will hit in 2 waves.

Wow winter is now is high gear and no change in sight! I am ready to rack and stack, but first I will spending the day out on the slopes! Perfect winter day and great winter season for skiing and snowmobilingg especially up here in snow county! Currently in a wsw for 9 inches of snow!!!!
No change in sight? Do you even read anything that Michael writes, like yesterday’s post?
Great day of racking stacking and tracking coming up with this major winter storm coming … Buckle up and stay tuned for further weather updates and possible warnings ..Fire in the hole let it snow..INDY..
Wow!! If Rocky thinks this is a fantastic snowy winter, then I guess him and I are on the same page! It was snow free for half of December and 3/4 of January, then one week of heavy snow at the end of January that melted in three days! We are also still below average for seasonal snowfall!! So yeah, I agree with Rocky, this is a great winter, that has mostly been snowless and a lot of the time with above average temps!
I agree, this has been a near perfect Winter. Half of it was gone before we even had snow on the ground, then when we received a bunch it melted in record time. The average snow depth has been way below average for the entire Winter, and everything is pointing to an early Spring in 2 weeks.
