Boxing day
I hope everyone had a great Christmas. When Christmas day passes, the celebration continues—at least in some countries. In the UK, as well as a number of other countries that used to be part of the British Empire—such as Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada—Boxing Day is a bank public holiday that became official in 1871. Boxing Day is traditionally recognized on December 26, but if that day falls on a Saturday, the celebration moves to the following Monday. If December 26 is a Sunday, Boxing Day is observed on the following Tuesday.
For some people, Boxing Day is a time to spend with family or friends, particularly those not seen on Christmas Day itself. Many people will gather for meals, spend time outside, or simply relax at home and enjoy the day off. Another idea is that December 26 was the day centuries ago when lords of the manor and aristocrats typically distributed “Christmas boxes” often filled with small gifts, money and leftovers from Christmas dinner to their household servants and employees, who were required to work on December 25, in recognition of good service throughout the year. These boxes were, in essence, holiday bonuses
To some Boxing Day is considered a shopping holiday, with stores offering reduced prices for Boxing Day sales, similar to Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States.
Additionally, Boxing Day has recently become synonymous with watching sports. A number of leagues in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland hold football and rugby matches, while Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa are known for cricket matches on Boxing Day. Other sports that typically occur on Boxing Day include horse racing and ice hockey. Fox hunts are traditionally a part of Boxing Day activities; however, fox hunting with dogs was banned in the UK in 2004. Hunters still gather, dressed resplendently in red hunting coats to the sound of the hunting horn but now follow artificially laid trails.
Here is some weather records for December 26th at Grand Rapids The warmest day was just last year with a record high of 61 however the low of 39 last year was not the warmest minimum that was 45 in 1936. The coldest maximum was 10 in 1993 and the record low was -6 in 1951. The biggest snow fall was 11.5” in 2001 and the most on the ground was 22” in 1951.

Here are the real weather facts for this coming week! 1. We will see minimal snow from all systems this week. We will see a rain snow/mix with both systems and then some dustings to an inch of lake effect snow. 2.On the other hand snow country will be seeing accumulating snows this week! 3. The current pattern has major snowstorms missing us the North, Northwest, and East! 4. I will be heading up to snow county next week and beyond to find some incredible skiing! 5. Rock n roll will never die! 6. The pandemic has been horrible for… Read more »
If you actually believe the detailed weekly forecast posted on the WOOD tv 8 app, Grand Rapids will be seeing 4 to 10 inches of snow from the mid week storm! I don’t buy that for one single second! We will be lucky to see one inch of snow? What a joke!
Less than 2” of snow for the season and it’s almost January. Wow!
GR is now more than 2 feet below average.
Unless Grand Rapids records 3.7″ before midnight on the 31st GR will set a new record low for the start of any winter season. the current record is 5.3″ set in the 1905/06 winter season. If GR indeed gets to that point we would be well on the way to a record low total seasonal snow fall

These are some astonishing and almost unbelievable records we are reaching and breaking.
Book that record, because we will be seeing very little snow this week! Mark it down!
We have reached a startling 3.5 inches of snow. Temp is currently 21 under mostly cloudy skies…
Who loves winter and can’t wait for the first WS Warning with tons of snow? Who wouldn’t love snowstorms during the winter season? Who would live in West MI and not look forward to snow? Incredible!
Yes we did have a GREAT storm for the holidays! Anytime you can get fresh fluffy pure white snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and have an official white Christmas it is an awesome event!! I am not sure how you could have better weather and a better timed storm! I absolutely love it!
So the 2 day snow fall totals for this great “storm” in GR were 1.2” the first day and a trace yesterday? I guess the bar has really been lowered on what exactly a Winter “storm” is. Fact is we are now about 2 feet below average in snowfall and growing by the day.
Interesting, can’t say I’ve ever heard of Boxing Day. When I read the title I was thinking of boxing the sport. Thought maybe it was people taking out holiday frustrations with a boxing match or something. Ha. Thanks Slim!
This is a copy of a comment that posted yesterday. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. Just in time for Christmas Grand Rapids received a inch of snow fall and thus gave Grand Rapids a white Christmas. So as of now Grand Rapids official December snow fall total is 1.2″ and the total for the season is now at 1.6″ That is still 23.8″ below average for this time of the year. It looks like there will be a rain/snow mix for the next two systems in our area so we should end December above average in the… Read more »
