Biting Cats – 80s on the Horizon

First, a word of wisdom for cat owners – Don’t pick up a growling cat.  My cat Monster chomped down on me yesterday as I was walking him on his leash around the yard.  He is a large long-haired cat who mainly lives inside.  The neighborhood cat who is very friendly wanted to meet him and it became a matter of ownership of territory between the two.  I made the mistake of picking Monster up to take him inside as they were growling at each other.  I should have known better – he promptly chomped down on my hand and wrist, so I had him attached by claws and teeth.  My wife was nearby and walked over to see why I was cursing and saw me trying to detach him from my hand.  When he finally realized what he was doing he let go.  I had multiple puncture wounds and scratches and was bleeding profusely.  I got cleaned up and my wife poured peroxide on my wounds.  I will live and have learned a valuable lesson.

Partly sunny skies can be expected Monday and Tuesday with highs in the 70s on Monday, and around 80 on Tuesday. A few showers will start to spread across the area beginning late Tuesday afternoon, and continue through Tuesday night. Warm weather will continue through much of this week and on through Memorial Day.

I got my tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers planted yesterday ( before the cat attacked).  According to the CPC, we have a 79% chance of above-normal temps and a 35% chance of above-normal rainfall – they have been talking about above normal rainfall for a few weeks and it hasn’t materialized.

Forecast Discussion

- Dry today into Tuesday morning

A warm front will remain situated off to the south of the state of
Michigan both today and tonight with weak ridging extending into
the area from the southeast. This will keep us dry both today and
tonight. Deeper moisture begins to arrive late tonight, but do not
think we are looking at precipitation until the midday hours of
Tuesday. Some sunshine and 850mb temperatures nudging towards +10C
should push most areas into the 70s today. Lows tonight dip back
into the upper 40s to the lower 50s. Highs and lows the next 24
hours will be near normal.

- Chances for precipitation Tuesday afternoon through much of week

Chances for precipitation begin to creep up starting midday on
Tuesday and may continue for much of the remainder of the 7 day
forecast period (through next Sunday). The 3km NAM as well as SREF
pops show pretty solid chances for showers and some embedded
thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. MUCAPE values
via the NAM are on the order of 1,000 j/kg Tuesday afternoon which
is more than sufficient for some thunder.

Off an on chances for showers and thunderstorms exist from
Wednesday through next Sunday. Much of the time we are beneath an
upper ridge, but there are embedded shortwave that will move into
and through the area. Feel that the GFS is overdone in its
precipitation throughout the period and like the drier look of the
ECMWF late in the week when we sit in the mean ridge position.
Feel the best chances for precipitation will come Tuesday
afternoon and Tuesday night as the moisture initially comes in
associated with a warm front aloft. The next good chance is on
Sunday with a cold front sags into and through the area from the
north.

- Warming trend is still on track

850mb temperature trend is still slowly upwards as we work through
the next 7 days. This afternoon 850mb temperatures are around +8
to +9C. By Friday we are around +15C. Highs will likely be in the
70s today and Tuesday, around 80 on Wednesday and into the 80s for
the latter half of the work week and into the weekend. It is going
to feel like summer this week, even though its the middle of May.

Keep and eye on those bites Michael. Cat bites can become infected easily. Watch for swelling and if it feels warm and more painful I would see a doctor.

It looks like we are now sliding into a warmer more summer like pattern. The 1st half of May 2021 has indeed been on the cool side with a mean of 52.1 that is good for a departure of -4.5° the high so far this month has been 83 way back on the 2nd and the low was 30 on the 1st. At the half way point there have been just 3 days with a mean of above average and 12 days below average. Officially only 0.70″ of ran had fallen and here at my house it it even less… Read more »
