We ended up with 1.27 inches of rain for the 5th and 6th, a healthy start for the month of August. This brings us to 10.48 inches for the summer months. Last year we had 6.86 inches for the same period, (these are Otsego totals). Yesterday our high was 73°. The next seven days we will see mainly below-normal temperatures and little or no precipitation. There may be lake effect rain showers for the weekend along the lakeshore counties.

Weather History
1900: An eight-day heat wave continues with temperatures in the lower to mid-90s. Adding to the discomfort are warm and muggy nighttime low temperatures that only fall to the mid and upper 70s.
1996: Heavy rains of over 3 inches flooded roads and streams in Lansing and Grand Ledge.
2008: Several waterspouts are observed over Lake Michigan from Grand Haven to South Haven. At least one of them appears to come onshore, but no damage occurs.
On August 7, 1984, thunderstorms brought winds of 73 mph in the mid-afternoon to Genesee County.

Forecast Discussion
- Dry For The Next Few Days No significant weather is expected through the short term forecast period. Surface high pressure with dry easterly flow bring plenty of sunshine Wednesday with highs near 80 and lower humidity. A similar scenario is on tap for much of Thursday, with a band of better cloud cover approaching the lakeshore by Thursday evening associated with the cold front. Precipitation is not expected as this band approaches given the lack of available moisture. - Cool Temperatures For Mid Summer Are On The Way 850mb temperatures this time of year can push into the lower to middle +20C resulting in temperatures in the 90s and above. That will very much not be the case as we move through the end of the week and into the weekend. 850mb temperatures bottom out Friday night through Saturday night around +7 degrees C. Regarding the upper trough that digs into the Great Lakes this weekend we had thought the ECMWF was the model to follow, but it has been trending to the deeper trough that has been consistently shown in the GFS now for days. So, following the deeper trough and therefore cooler temperatures. GFS Mos guidance shows temperatures in the 70s Friday through Monday and we feel this on the right track. In fact on Saturday we expect that some areas across Central Lower Michigan that stick in the clouds the longest will hold in the 60s for highs. Normal highs are in the lower 80s, so with highs forecast in the upper 60s on Saturday we will be 15 degrees lower than normals which is very notable for August. Those packing for weekend camping trips may want to throw a blanket in the mix as lows Friday night and Saturday night will be in the lower 50s in spots. - Precipitation Chances Not Zero Over The Weekend Overall we will be in a northwest flow pattern as the surface beneath the upper troughing. The cold air flowing across Lake Michigan which is around +23C right now on a lake wide average will probably produce some rain showers. Not often we talk about lake generated / lake effect rain showers in August but we are today. +23C water temps combined with +7C 850mb air temps will produce delta T`s in the middle teens C. The instability produced over the lake will most certainly produce clouds and we will probably see isolated to scattered rain showers from Friday through Sunday. No major wash out but we will probably need to increase our chances for rain showers with time as we get closer to the weekend.
Keep the below normal temp pattern rocking! Incredible summer of below normal temps! WOW!
Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather pattern. We probably have a solid couple more months… until the action picks up again
