Average Hot and Cold.

While this year June has started off with below average temperatures it has not been nearly as cool as the coldest Junes in the past. And it has been a far cry from the warmest Junes in the past. The average 30 year mean for June at Grand Rapids is 68.9 and over the years just two have had a June end with that average mean 1964 and 1944.

The average years

1964  June 1964 started out on the cool side with 6 days in a row of below average temperatures. All 6 of the days had highs in the upper 60’s to low 70’s and lows were in the upper 30’s to the mid 40’s. After that cool start the rest of the month had mostly warm temperatures with some hot days tossed in. The month ended on the hot side with highs in the upper 80’s to mid 90’s and highs of 94 on the 29 and 30th.

1944 Unlike 1964 this year started out on the warm side with highs in the upper 80’s and two days at 90. Then there was a sharp cool down when the high only reached 58 on the 6th that lead to a several day cool spell with highs from that 58 to 70 and lows reaching all the way down to 39. After that cool down the rest of the month was warm with highs reaching 97 and 96.
The Hot years the warmest mean in June at Grand Rapids are 74.2 in 1919, 74.0 in 1933 and 73.4 in 1921. 1919 started out on the hot side with highs in the upper 80’s to mid 90’s In the month there were 8 days with highs in the 90’s 6 more days with highs in the upper 80’s Just 5 days had highs below 80 and there were no days cooler than 71. The high for the month was 94. There were 6 nights when the low did not get below 70. The low for the month was 49 on the 29th

1933 is the 2nd warmest June at GR. June 1933 was a month of some big temperature swings. The coolest highs were in the low to mid 60’s and the hottest were in the upper 90’s (97) There were 12 days with highs of 90 or better 4 nights of lows in the 70’s two of then at 76. 3 nights had lows in the 40’s with 42 being the coolest.

1921 is the 3rd warmest June at Grand Rapids. June 1921 started off on the cool side with 6 of the first 7 days cooler than average. From June 8th on none of the days were cooler than average. For the month 10 days were 90 or better. The high for the month was 93 and the low was 41.

The years with the coolest Junes. The top 3 coolest months of June happened in 1969 with a mean of 61.8 (that is 12.8° cooler than the warmest) 1928 with a mean of 61.9 and 1958 with a mean of 62.0.

Bryan Adams song “The Summer of 69” well that summer started in Grand Rapids with the coolest June of record so far. That June 10 of the first 11 days were below average with many days with highs in the upper 50’s and 60’s Then there was a brief 2 day warm up and the temperature jumped all the way up to 90 for one day. After that there were 13 more days in a row of below average temperatures than one more day when the temperature jumped up to 92 that time the low for the month was 38. Even in the coolest June of record at Grand Rapids there were 2 days when it reached 90. In 1928 the 2nd coolest June of record that June only had two days all month with a temperature above average and 28 days below average. There were 9 days with highs of more than 10 degrees below average. The coldest low for the month was not that bad as it was just 43 and the high for the month was just 82. Like 1928 the June of 1958 it was just the number of days that were more than 10 degrees below average that made it so cool. The low for the month was 37 and the high was 88.

One of the take always is that even in some of the coolest summer months there can be a few hot days and in the hottest of the summer months there can be some cool days.

Looking ahead it looks like we will be heading into a warm and dry period. The hottest of the upcoming warm up looks to be to the west and southwest of our area. We will have to see just how warm/hot it becomes.

Good stats as always, Slim. It appears that historical data cannot be used to predict weather. Every year, month, day and shoot, weather system is different.
