April odds and ends

We are now well into April and as is typical this year there have been a lot of up and downs. In looking back April has some of the biggest year to year swings in weather we have here in Michigan. It has been as hot as 90 and as cold as +3 here at Grand Rapids. in the UP the range is even bigger with the Sault having been as warm as 85 and as low as -13. And at Marquette it has been as hot as 92 and as cold as -9. There have been tornadoes and there have been ice storms and snowstorms. This week I am going to take a closer look at some of the weather extremes that have occurred over the years on the dates of April 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19.

April 15th

This week on April 15th the high of 36 was the 3 coldest maximum for any April 15th at Grand Rapids. And the low of 25 was the 9 coldest low for the dated. The coldest maximum is 35 set in 2018. The coldest low is 18 set in 1943. The warmest high of 84 was set in 2003 and the warmest low of 62 was also set in 2003.  The most rain fall is 1.40” in 1991. The biggest snow fall is 3.0” in 1919. The most snow on the ground was 3.0” is 2019 (a 100 year event?) last year the H/L was 48/32 and the 3” of snow to start the day.

April 16th

The H/L yesterday was 40/27. The high of 40 became the 10th coldest maximum for any April 16th at GR and the low of 27 is the 9th coldest low. The all time coldest high of 33 was set in 1935. The all time coldest low of 21 was set in 1904. The warmest high of 86 was set in 2002. And the warmest low of 66 was set in 1896. A more recent low of 65 was set in 2002. The most rain fall is 1.97 in 1972. The biggest snow fall is 11.8” in 1961 wow that was some April snow storm. The most on the ground at 7 am is 3” in 1921. Last year the H/L was 64/38.

April 17th

On April 17 the highest was 84 in 1976. The coldest maximum was just 34 in 2018. The coldest low was 24 in 1983. The warmest minimum is 62 in 1896 in more recent times a 61 was recorded in 1976. The wettest April 17 is 2.94” in 1922. The biggest snow is 1.4” in 1961. The most snow on the ground is 7” also in 1961. Last year the H/L was 64/42.

April 18th

The warmest high on any April 18th in Grand Rapids is 86 in 2004. The coldest maximum on any April 18th is 34 in 1983. The coldest low is 22 also in 1983. The warmest low is 60 in 1976. The wettest April 18th is the 3.30” that fell in 2013. The most snow to fall on the 18th happened is 3.0” that fell in 1912. The most on the ground at 7 AM is the 2” on the ground in 1961. Last year the H/L was 64/41.

April 19th

The warmest April 19 was the 82 that happened in 1985. The coldest maximum was a cold 30 in 1904. The coldest low and 19 in 1897 in more recent times it got down to 22 in 1983. The most rain fell in 1993 when 1.89” fell. The most snow to fall was just a trace the last time that happened was in 2018. Most of the days going forward the most snow that as fallen is just a trace. There are a few days with more but not many. Of course the most snow on the ground was just a trace. Last year the H/L was 50/40.

Nice stats Slim! Definitely a wide swing in temps and weather over the years in April. Not at all shocking to see 70 one day and 30 two days later this time of year. Seems to happen almost every year.
