We have had perhaps a half of an inch of snow thus far (at 6:30 am). The main area of snow is mostly along the lakeshore south of Grand Rapids and along I96 to the north.
Snow bands continue to move through Southwest Michigan this morning. The heaviest snow is expected before and during this morning’s commute, and drivers in Southern Lower Michigan should anticipate slick and snow-covered roads. Visibility will be near zero at times due to falling snow and blowing snow. The most significant accumulations are expected along/south of a line from Muskegon to Alma.
The NWS is giving central Michigan the greatest amount of snow today and still insisting on half a foot around Alma. With recent forecast trends, I am thinking lesser amounts over most of the area.
The snow should taper off by early afternoon for most of the area with some light freezing drizzle around the area with little or no effect on travel conditions. Slightly cooler than normal temps will continue through most of the rest of the week.
This was an awesome snowstorm and the outdoor winter sports conditions should be excellent all week into the weekend! Incredible!

Looks like the NWS did a pretty good job forecasting this event. They did change the amounts from 2-4 to 3-6 quite a few times, but either way I think a lot of people are reporting amounts of around 3-5 inches, so they had the right idea. Sometimes we get too caught up with exact amounts, when other factors like temperature, timing, wind can have a bigger effect.
The NWS did great and it was another bingo for the RBD 3 to 5 inches! Incredible!
Today is the anniversary of the two biggest snowstorms of my life time. And of course they are the storms of January 26th 1967 and 1978.

Yup, a trip down memory lane for both of us – will have more in tomorrow’s weather history for the week.
I will never forget the the storm in Jan 1978. My husband and I had moved here in June of 77 and I had never experienced winter like our first one here. Since then I have learned alot about the weather on this side of the state.
I just took a new snow fall measurement and here at my house I am now up to 4″ total for this event. I still think we will have to keep a eye on the weekend system.

Grand Rapids is officially reporting just 2.2″ of snow so far.
That will change in a big way before the grand totals are in!

Great way to end this fabulous Winter month of January temps in the 20’s lows in the single digits and another snowstorm on the horizon I will call this wonderful ice fishing weather the rest of the week get outside and enjoy it …..INDY..

Starting snowing at 330am this morning and still going strong no Dry slot in my area over 4 inches of new snow probably closer to 5 amazing ……INDY
The snow has mostly stopped here there is some light snow grapple falling but not much and I now have the driveway cleared and I took a snow fall measurement and I have 2.5″ of new and total snow on the ground. With that snow grapple falling the temperature here is now at 28.

We are still getting pummeled with snow!
2.5” here. So pretty out. Snow has pretty much stopped here but it looks like we may get some more later today. Lots of cars in the ditch in the area. Usually by this time, motorists have remembered how to drive in this weather.

So far, we’ve seen no evidence of a back loaded winter. In fact, January snowfall is still well below monthly averages. And much warmer than average as well. The latest CPC’s show this warmth likely continuing.
