We have a more active weather pattern setting up for this last week of October and beginning of November. Kind of figured it would be so seeing I have to dig a three foot deep hole in my front yard to get down to the cover of my septic tank to have it pumped this week. Luckily I have tarps to keep the whole thing dry until the pumper gets here. My hat is off to these guys who do the pumping because it is a nasty job. I learned early in the game to use a biodegradable toilet paper or you end up with a thick paper mache like mess on the top layer of the tank. You city dwellers don’t have to worry about these things with the exception of having to pay for all the water going down your drains. Those of us in the country have to maintain our septic tanks, drain-fields and wells. The cost to have it pumped this year is $260 which is $100 more than it was twenty years ago – this is the fourth time I have had to have it done.
Luckily these things are out of sight and out of mind and you have to keep ahead of them before they act up which can be a nasty business. It is not like it was in the time of my grandparents when they had out houses to do their business in. I remember those days when I would spend weekends out on the farm and have to run to the outhouse in the middle of winter, one did not spend much time out there in the cold, the same thing for those hot summer days. When the pit became full it was time to dig another deep hole and move the house to another location. They didn’t have indoor plumbing until the mid 1960s and they heated their home with wood. All in all I think this was a good experience for a kid to see that lifestyle. One of the great things I remember are the feather beds and quilts they had. When you crawled into bed you would sink in and be surrounded by warmth.
Currently we have a band of rain moving in from the west across the lake. We should see rain during the day which could be heavy at times, mainly between I96 and I94. We could see a quarter to a half an inch of rain from this system before it moves out later this evening then lake effect rain will move into the south west quadrant of the state.
High pressure will make a brief appearance on Monday afternoon into the evening before another stronger system moves in Tuesday night bringing in more rain and the possibility of thunderstorms.
Halloween looks great for the trick or treaters, maybe our only chance of some clearing skies this week though mainly in the evening and overnight before yet another system moves in for Thursday. That system could bring us heavy rain, wind and the possibility of snow on the backside of the cold front. We may see some fifties midweek before the temps drop back into the 40s Friday on into next weekend.
The Lions play the Seahawks today in Detroit. They are undefeated in October and have looked more like a professional team who can hopefully continue their strengths into the playoffs.

We are having a heavy down pour with some thunder and lighting. Lots of leaves falling off the trees.
Lightning, thunder, and a pretty intense hail storm here! I think I’ve seen more hail in the past month or two than I’ve seen in a long time. Getting ready for those fabulous January and February thunderstorms we’ve been having the past several years!
Here too.
Nother cool raining day this has been a fantastic Fall if you ask me Winter will be even better!! Why not some sports talk our Detroit Lions are still up and down and they will find away to lose today as Rocky would say mark it down!! The Red Wings just suck the Jeff and Kenny H should be fired Pistons will be 500 before you know it don’t let this good start think they are going all they way and the Detroit Red Sox’s will win the world series tonight!! Get the tricks and winter treats ready have a great Sunday!! INDY!! Ohh Go Blue!
It’s too bad the Wings signed Holland to an extension. Yzerman quit the Lightning and still lives in Oakland County. He was a great GM at Tampa Bay. I hope they can figure out a way to replace Holland with him. Blashill has very little veteran talent, so everyone knew it would take a couple of years to develop the youngsters. They look like the DeadWings of the 80s right now.
Pistons are 4-1!
Just my personal opinion, I think there is already a deal in place for Yzerman to get hired as GM next year. Either Holland takes another position within the organization to open it up for Yzerman or Holland leaves and becomes GM for an expansion team. But, the only reason Yzerman left the Lightning to move back to Detroit would seem to be that they have something lined up for him to get back with the Wings!
I hope so. I had my doubts when he took the position at TB, but he more than proved himself as a GM.
100% agree!
Agreed!
Great call on lions!
Grand Rapids now has had 17 days in a row of below average temperatures. However with the mild start to the month GR mean temp for October is just -0.8°. For some reason the leaves are hanging on tough this fall as there are still a lot of leaves still in the trees around the GR area. It should be noted that is not for the lack of cold temperatures that they are hanging on.
Slim
Hey mv I think that you just jinxed the Lions! We shall see?
