A Brief Touch of Summer

We have a mild 51° at 7 am this morning with the promise of temps rising to near 80° today.  The further south of Grand Rapids you are the warmer the temps will be.

High temperatures today will be 15 to 20 degrees above normal inland and 5 to 10 degrees above normal along the lakeshore. In some locations, they will not be too far off from record highs.

With the dry weather in place the past few days we have increases in tree pollen blowing in the breeze.  This creates a miserable situation for some of us as we hope for rain to clear the air.

Chances of storms and foul weather (as they used to say in the old days) increase after midnight.  As usual for this spring we really need some soaking rain.

Forecast Discussion

-- Much warmer today --

Latest sfc analysis shows a warm front extending across southern
Wisconsin then southeast into Indiana. Radar is showing a line of
convection firing just north of the sfc warm front...along the h8
front over southern MN and central WI and slowly lifting north.
NAMNest is not bullish on seeing any of the Wisconsin convection
make it into the cwa this morning. What will occur is the warm front
will lift north through the cwa today. Much warmer air will flow
over southern Lower yielding highs around 80 south of a Holland to
Mt Pleasant line.

-- Showers/storms likely tonight and Wednesday night --

A short wave is progd to ride northeast along the frontal boundary
tonight. A little stronger LLJ, coupled with 600-700 j/kg MUCAPE and
some decent shear after 06z could produce a couple of stronger cells
tonight. Hail would be the main threat. As the wave moves by, cooler
air will flow south and highs will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler
Wednesday. Another wave will ride northeast along the old cold front
Wednesday night and produce showers/storms, mainly across the
southern 2/3 of the cwa. The heavier rain should remain south of the
cwa closer to the low track.

-- Colder late week --

The trailing low will drag a cold front through the cwa Thursday. H8
temps are progd to fall from 11c Thursday afternoon to -3c Friday
morning. This will result in highs Friday in the lower to mid 50s.

The colder air won`t last long though as south flow returns Saturday
sending temperatures into the 60s and then 70s by Sunday. Each
frontal passage will have the chance of producing light
precipitation.

Oh man, Rocky’s time is nearing an end for the season. I’m sure you’ll be back Friday for the one night that gets into the 30’s but that should be about it. The CPC definitely isn’t looking good for you either today. So after Friday, guess we’ll see you in October again?

Fun fact. While it was hard for me to believe but on this date there have been a total of 8 years where it has gotten 80 or better and a total of 20 years where it has gotten to 75 or better. Now here comes the fun fact. Of the years it has gotten to 80 or better 5 of the summers that followed were cooler then average and 3 were average ( 1990, 1962, 1986, 1915 and 1970 cooler. 1899,1938 and 1914 average) but even more surprising is that of all of the years that it has gotten… Read more »

Odd but interesting! Well if I could wishcast the way some do I would wish for far less 90 degree days than last year. Those days are just a brutal grind.

Except there’s no cause and effect. Just happenstance. But that’s funny.

Just think “analog” years. Now you know what I think of the so called “analog” long range weather guess.

Basically no winter and no snow this year and now more 80’s in April for GR? If only we could have this weather every year!

Rocky (Rockford)
Rocky (Rockford)

This past winter was great for skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, etc, etc, etc! It rarely got above 40 degrees and plenty you snow on the ground for outdoor winter sports, so your statement is 100%wrong as usual!

No 80’s in sight!

Of course we will have to see just how warm it gets today in Grand Rapids. On this date there have been 8 years with highs in the 80’s and a total of 20 years with highs of 75 or more. The last time it has gotten 75 or more on this date was in 2009 (76). Of note is that year July was one of the coolest on record here at Grand Rapids. It has not gotten to 80 or better here since 1990.
