Heavy Snow

Not much going on at 6am, just a bit of light snow with a temp of 11°.  Looking at the RAP, NAM and NAMNEST models they all are in agreement with the snow intensifying after 9am with snowfall totals in the 8 to 14 inch range by midnight tonight.

Allegan and Kalamazoo counties have been added to the warning area which lasts until 7am tomorrow morning forecasting 6 to 10 inches of snow with winds gusting to 40mph.

Most of the rest of the counties including Kent, Ottawa and Ionia the warning lasts until 7pm tonight with 8 to 12 inches of snow and winds gusting to 40mph.

Those in the advisory area can expect 4 to seven inches of snow and gusty winds.  I suspect Lansing will be on the higher side of the snowfall.  Regardless of the snow amount the temps will be cold.  Temps may rise to close to 30° south of I96 while the further north you go it will be colder – Gaylord will be lucky to get out of the teens today.

It will be a cold and snowy day but temps are expected to be back to well above freezing by the weekend.  Be careful if you choose to go out into the elements today….

These areas are fairly close to most of the posters on the blog. Pretty much a 6 inch event over most of the Kent County area. That Belmont total is very close to me and also right in Rockford’s back yard.

Looks pretty accurate. Overall a underperforming event. Decent snow fall, but nothing compared to the 15, even 20 inch lake events we get.

My snowblower missed me. I just tore through ours and both next door neighbors. Both hubbys are out of town for work. Hey, I got a cup of hot cocoa out of it. I’m guessing we received 5-6″. Fortunately, it wasn’t heavy and wet like first forecasted. It was very light and dry .

Slim

It was lighter because it was cold during the snow fall. I am posting the total precp for the area above and it was right in the range of the forecast but the flack size was small thus the lower snow fall totals.

Got the blower out of storage to use for only the second time all Winter. I’d say we received 5 to 6 inches, but impossible to measure. Parts of the driveway were clear to the pavement, and other parts had 1 foot drifts. Get ready for a flood this weekend!

The snowfall reports in the Lansing area show 4-5″. I’m not sure if we received that much. I’m going to wait until the snow stops falling before I go out to remove snow.

Just received an email from superintendent indicating that more school closures are possible this week due to the wind chills.

I’ll be curious to see if we’re open tomorrow. Main roads are okay but the secondary roads won’t be clear by tomorrow. I don’t think the bus can make it down our road.

Sheri (Eaton Rapids)
Sheri (Eaton Rapids)

Call me crazy, but I was out today using my 1997 Olds Delta 88 and the side roads were not plowed, but I was able to get through. As usual, I really think the districts have become over zealous with closing. When I was little, the buses were not as well built as they are now, and the closures were not multiple days for 5-6″ of snowfall. I just check the latest closures and I don’t see your district….oh well… most likely Wed and Thurs due to the cold 🙂

Snowfall here sitting at 7.5 inches and still snowing! What a storm!

Slim

We will have to see what the “official” snow fall comes in at but the record for today is 6″ in 1977 in 2nd place is 5.1″ in 1961 and in 3rd place is 3.9″ in 2004 so this event will be one of the top 3 if not the most snow at Grand Rapids for this date. BTW over at Lansing they too could have had a record snow fall for this date their record is just 3.0″ way back in 1875 and in 2nd place is just 2.9″ in 1977 with 2.0″ in 2009 in 3rd place.

Those seem like remarkably low totals to be standing as records. This is the time of year most of our historic blizzards have taken place when we’ve had double digit snow falls.

Slim

Those are the records. Sorry they seem so low but then again lake effect is generally over by this time of the year.

I was out and about and while all roads are passable they are none the less snow covered and many 2 wheel drive cars and pick up trucks are having a issue in places. At this time with the snow now in a lull I have anywhere between 4 to 9 inches of new snow and now have a total of 11 inches on the ground. One reason the snow fall totals are less then what they could have been is the small size of the flakes but the snow we do have is what I would call sugar like… Read more »

.UPDATE… Issued at 1056 AM EST Mon Jan 28 2019 Our main focus with the update this morning is on the ongoing snow event today. We will not be adjusting headlines at all this morning for the remainder of this portion of the event. We will be trending snow totals down a touch. Also, we are starting to figure out how we will transition headlines to match the brutal cold and lake effect aspect coming up for the next couple of days. That adjustment will likely come with the afternoon package as this part of the event starts to wind… Read more »

I’m with you. WLNS said this morning that in our area, there will be a very tight degradation line. You and I are on the border of somewhat little accumulations and big time accumulations. Our daughter’s dance studio in Charlotte closed today. Not like we planned on driving down there anyway…

Sheri (Eaton Rapids)

I am from old school (verrrry old :)) today’s storm is like “whatever”… nothing major but enough to slow down and take it easy while staying indoors. The flakes are small which has lessen the blow. Regardless.. it is beautiful and I am so happy that we finally got some winter.

Slim

Getting moderate to heavy snow with snow blowing snow here. I took a quick measurement and I have 5.8″ of new snow fall and now have a total of 11.2″ on the ground. I have to say with a temperature of only 8.5° this is one of the coldest no lake effect snow falls I have seen in a long time. And it looks like we may pick up a lot of lake effect over the next few days as well with a west wind.
